Law Firms Hiring Articling Students
The program is designed for students to work eight hours a day. There is no billable expenditure of time. The main objective is to introduce students to the daily practice of law and Parlee McLaws LLP. The program is primarily designed for second-year law students, although first-year (and to a lesser extent) third-year students also participate. The program is carefully structured and managed to create a supportive environment focused on success, as we want every summer employee to receive an offer and agree to become a Dickinson Wright Associate. We view the Summer Associate Program as key to our goal of identifying and attracting the most qualified law students who will drive the firm`s strategic growth. Dickinson Wright recruits law students for each of our offices. We strategically hire our summer associates in the hope that they will each become colleagues upon graduation. The artistic experience is intended to be enriching, positive and challenging, and we encourage and maintain an open, respectful, inclusive and team-oriented work environment where students are recognized and treated as valued professionals. Our students are encouraged to participate in the life of the company by participating in events such as charity events, holiday parties, team sports and other social activities. DLA Piper (Canada) LLP hires summer students and articling students in each of its offices as required and in accordance with local regulatory guidelines.
Each office recruits its own students, but the student program is coordinated nationally by our Director of Associate Counsel and Student Development. The office of Parlee McLaws LLP Calgary recently participated in the summer employment program for first-year law students. Our firm hires two or three law students who have completed their first year of law school just for our Calgary office. At DLA Piper (Canada) LLP, we are looking for outstanding students who will remain with the firm when they become lawyers and contribute to the future of the firm. We are committed to providing our students with the best possible education and training programs. We want all our students, at the end of their internships, to be highly competent professionals, ready and eager to start practicing. Students from other law schools are also considered, and Dickinson Wright encourages these students to apply. All applications must be submitted online to www.vilawportal.com, and more information about Dickinson Wright can be found online at www.nalpcanada.com.
For intern candidates: While the company conducts the majority of its recruitment through the on-campus interview process, Dickinson Wright also accepts applications from students for internship positions. These applications are accepted from the beginning of August of the year, before students begin their third year of law. All applications must include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, bachelor`s transcript (photocopy of original transcript), law school transcript (photocopy of original transcript) and list of final year courses and must be submitted to Melissa Eisen – meisen@dickinsonwright.com. Letters of recommendation are optional. Contacts: To speak to one of our articling students about their experience with Dickinson Wright, please contact: Our students receive a wide range of legal work similar to our articling program. Experienced lawyers are appointed mentors to guide students through the three to four months of employment and give them access to our core practice areas. Informal performance evaluations are offered. Dickinson Wright`s internship program runs from August to June.
The Internship Program consists of three rotations; Corporate, Litigation and Real Estate, with the ability to deal with other practice areas under these broader umbrellas, such as mergers and acquisitions, private equity, franchises, bankruptcy and insolvency, to name a few. Dickinson Wright offers its articling students a competitive compensation package, comparable to other Bay Street firms, which includes: • 10 days of vacation; • personal telephone allowance; • Payment of examination fees for admission to bar associations. Articling students have direct access to all Dickinson Wright lawyers who will work alongside them. It is common for articling students to work directly with a partner on a file, interact with clients, and delve deeper into legal issues. Interns work on corporate transactions, litigation, filings, arbitrations, mediations, research projects, presentations and participate in meetings with clients. Interns also have the opportunity to attend corporate events, including the firm`s quarterly U.S. partner dinners (to meet colleagues from Dickinson Wright`s network of 19 offices), corporate retreats, as well as Dickinson Wright Black-Tie`s annual dinner.
