Level 2: €2,000 per year. In 2022, Tier 2 scholarships were awarded to a total of 121 first-year students for the duration of their studies. Tier 2 scholarships are awarded to applicants who meet the criteria for the 1916 scholarship, but ultimately did not qualify for a Tier 1 scholarship. “When you`re younger, you don`t have all the doubts that come with the responsibility of a parent,” she says. “I constantly ask myself: am I doing the right thing for my family? But I`m halfway through my studies now and I know I`m going to accomplish something. The 1916 scholarship is a financial award designed to encourage the participation and success of students from sectors of society that are significantly underrepresented in higher education. However, this combination of pursuing success and previous work experience can give adult law students an advantage. Angela Burns, team leader of Arden`s legal program, says the first thing legal employers look for is a commitment to the issue, and there`s nothing more committed than changing careers to become a lawyer. Of the 100 places available, approximately 50% are reserved for law graduates, 40% for degree holders, and the remaining 10% is allocated at the discretion of the Society`s Education Committee. The cost of the course is £2,900 per year (plus an entrance fee of £250) and assessment is by exam.
From 2002 onwards, access to the curriculum will be based on examinations with credit points. There are approximately 50 places in the degree program and all lecturers are practicing lawyers. The course is intensive (students must attend four evenings a week for 2-3 hours) and corresponds to a full-time program in terms of content. The people most likely to consider graduating are aspiring lawyers, those whose work exposes them to legal issues, and recent graduates with non-legal training. Anyone over the age of 21 is considered a mature student. As a mature student, you can opt for full-time study, but work and family commitments can mean having to juggle part-time studies with your personal and/or professional life. “That`s how mature students put themselves under pressure. They compare themselves to 18-year-olds and think they have something to prove. Most universities expect applicants to have at least three A levels or equivalent with grading requirements between A* and C. For the GDL, a bachelor`s degree of at least 2:2 is generally expected. Admission is limited to approximately 25 students per cycle One profession that is more “suited to adult students” than most is law. Older students seem to be doing well in undergraduate programs and their life experience will benefit them when they begin to practice. The Honourable Society of King`s Inns, which trains aspiring lawyers, also accepts mature students, and as long as a candidate`s qualifications match, a primary law degree is not a requirement to study the legal profession. This four-year degree covers all core law subjects and is recognised by Ireland`s professional bodies: the Law Society and the Kings Inns. Upon successful completion of the program, applicants will receive an LLB degree. There are approximately 100 places in the Lawyer Diploma Programme and access is open to holders of a law degree or the King`s Inns Diploma of Legal Studies.
The course lasts two years and students attend (mandatory) lectures in the late afternoon five days a week. In terms of lectures, students are required to attend tutorials and visits to relevant institutions such as courts and prisons. The University of Law welcomes older students and offers a variety of different modes of study: full-time, part-time, attendance, and online. Approximately 15% of our full-time students are mature students. We have locations across the country as well as online courses, so you don`t have to move far from home to study with us. We have a large number of mature students in our online courses, as they find this type of study better to balance their studies with their other commitments: more than half of our online students are mature. After completing the first two years of study, students receive a law degree (Dip. L.). Although a student may choose to complete their studies at that time, in practice, the majority of students remain in place to complete the BCL study program over another two years. BCL evening lectures are recorded, which provides flexibility for students.
“[Mature students] often come into the profession with a different skill or area of knowledge,” says Burns. “Many already have a degree and have a niche in which to enter the field of law. For example, if you have a degree in chemistry, you can consult patent law. Or a former nurse may be medically neglectful. There are many different fields and your expertise opens up opportunities in niche businesses. Time is a limited resource for many older students, who may have additional responsibilities such as child care and, as they are less likely to qualify for student financial aid, employment. The problem is particularly acute in law schools and in the legal profession in general, which is known for its intense work culture. A year-long study on student resilience and mental health at the University of Leeds found that, unlike most other students, law students have little free time to engage in non-work-related activities. “It takes a little time to get used to the pace of study, and adult students sometimes try to overdo it – they pick up the playlist and think they have to do everything. But what you really want them to learn is the art of figuring out what they think is necessary. Careful preparation for tutorials and seminars is essential and doing work outside of contact hours is one of the biggest challenges for older students. The fee for the first and second years is €2,850 per year and for years three and four €3,950 per year.

Older students may have more difficulty with this aspect of the course than their younger counterparts, says Nick Taylor, director of student education at the University of Leeds Law School. He says, “They`re probably used to doing a job where you finish a project and then that`s it, you keep going. But you never really finalize the law. In the first year, students cover topics such as taxation, competition law, practice and procedures, while in the second year, advocacy, legal drafting and negotiation, and evidence law are part of the program. As part of the King`s Inns tradition, students must also keep (eat dinner) in the Commons Society`s dining room for 10 days each school year. However, this route through the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx) requires you to study fewer subjects overall, exams and training time may be shorter and costs may be lower. It is also more common for CILEx students to work in a law firm or in-house and study part-time. Many of our graduates successfully practice lawyers and lawyers.
