Criminal Defense Legal Aid

The Legal Aid Society has been at the forefront of public defense in New York City since 1876 and plays an important role in shaping the practice of criminal defense law in America, often setting the standard after which others practice. The practice includes experienced trial offices in each district – an appeals office, a defense unit for the revocation of probation conditions, a prisoners` rights project, a community justice unit, and a special trial department. In each area, the practice has developed innovative model projects that bring together expertise and advance both criminal justice practice and discourse. Criminal prosecutions require the government to prove every element of its case without a doubt. This is a very high standard, and an experienced defense lawyer can use the many opportunities to weaken the prosecutor`s arguments. For example, there may be a problem with the chain of custody of important evidence, or the defendant may not have been properly informed of their rights under the Fifth Amendment.
