The program`s faculty, staff, and older students would be happy to assist you as you begin graduate studies and throughout your stay here at Carleton University. The language of instruction at Carleton is English. To be admitted to Carleton`s graduate programs, you must demonstrate that your english proficiency and use of English are sufficient for postgraduate study at an English-speaking university. Carleton University is located in Canada`s capital, close to many of Canada`s leading legal institutions, including the Supreme Court, the federal Parliament and the federal Department of Justice. Carleton`s Department of Law and Legal Studies offers programs for those who are interested in law school and want to pursue a career in law-related fields but do not necessarily want to become lawyers. With a location in the nation`s capital, Carleton is located close to Parliament, the Supreme Court of Canada and various departments directly and indirectly involved in the law. In addition, the offices of many advocacy groups and social movements dealing with legal and social change provide Carleton with unparalleled resources for research and policy studies in the areas of law and governance. Students interested in a Master of Laws can now choose from a thesis, a research essay, and a course option. The Faculty of Law and Law comes from a variety of backgrounds – law, history, sociology, anthropology, communication and political science – and offers students access to a diverse and interdisciplinary pool of resources. Students have until July 15 to be considered for admission and funding if space and funds are still available. Previous applications are highly recommended. Carleton University`s Department of Law and Legal Studies has a long tradition of examining law in its general social context, drawing on the tools and ideas offered by various academic disciplines. Our faculty members reflect this commitment to interdisciplinarity as we come from a variety of disciplines, including anthropology, history, political science, philosophy, public order, sexology and human rights. These courses provide students with a common theoretical and interdisciplinary framework for the program. In addition, students are encouraged to take 0.5 points in a related discipline in consultation with the graduate program supervisor. The Graduate Law and Legal Studies Association (GLSA) is the student association of the department. GLSA`s mandate is to facilitate the participation of PhD students in law in the department and the academic community, to foster a sense of community among master`s and doctoral graduate students, and to advocate for the rights and priorities of doctoral students in LAW within the department and the university. As a teaching assistant at Carleton University, you are a member of a union (CUPE 4600). Some graduate programs in law are only available to law graduate students. To be eligible for admission to undergraduate programs in Carleton University`s Department of Law and Legal Studies, applicants must hold an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OPSD) or equivalent, including six Ontario University Courses (OAC) or at least six Grade 12 university or university or college courses, or a combination thereof. The department also offers a bachelor`s degree in criminology and criminal justice and a bachelor`s degree in human rights in collaboration with other units. Once the application has been filed and your filing fee has been processed, it cannot be changed. A collaborative specialization in African Studies is also available. The Master in Legal Studies consists of seminar courses offered in the department and in other disciplines, combined with one of two major research projects: either a Master`s Research Essay (MRE) or a Master`s thesis.
