It is important to properly manage changes to sanctions at the command level to ensure that members` due process rights are respected. Remember that for many actions, an order must have an articulated reason for changing the punishment, such as a proven improvement in behavior or the finding that the punishment resulted in clear injustice. If there is a valid reason, there are four measures that the NJP authorities or their successors can take under Article 15, paragraph 6 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ): suspension, mitigation, remission of sentence and annulment.
