The New York City Legal Department is accepting applications from licensed attorneys with at least three years of experience in criminal or juvenile litigation for the position of Associate Corporate Counsel (ACC) in the Family Court Division. Our mission is twofold: juvenile justice and intergovernmental and international assistance to children. This position is specifically for the practice of juvenile justice. In cases in which juveniles are accused of crimes, the law requires that rehabilitation determine the outcome that best meets the needs of the youth and the protection of the community. The staff of the Family Court Department work according to the fastest schedules and with complex situations to achieve this goal. The position offers the opportunity to engage with approximately 250 people in dedicated service to children, families, and communities in New York City. We are a city-wide division with locations in all five districts. We investigate cases involving criminal charges, ranging from minor offenses, often resulting from conflicts within families, which are immediately taken care of by dedicated support teams. complex cases of minors involved in robbery, robbery, possession of weapons, arson, attempted murder and murder and sexual offences handled by specially trained personnel.
Assistants have the opportunity to qualify and join the Divisional Special Victims Unit, which handles complex litigation related to sexual offences and other related cases and whose members have received national training and certification in forensic interviewing and other specialized skills. and/or the Divisional Major Case Unit, which handles advanced litigation, handles the most serious charges and most difficult needs, and works closely with federal, state and local law enforcement agencies to address community safety concerns; and the ability to qualify in most New York District Attorneys` offices, where they work alongside the ADAs in juvenile delinquent cases brought in family court under landmark age raising legislation. Lawyers shoulder their own burden and work with others in a team approach. and can handle the most complex cases handled by experienced lawyers. Tasks include: interviewing victims, civilian witnesses and police officers; Work with law enforcement agencies to obtain, assess and analyze evidence to determine the feasibility of a case, thereby determining whether the case can be filed or should be dismissed. If the case can be brought before a court, decide whether a community redirection is appropriate; if the matter is filed, prepare statements; File petitions to conduct and deliver discoveries, including body camera, DNA, video and Giglio evidence; preparing and conducting preliminary hearings, including pre-application detention and probable case hearings determining the juvenile`s detention status; hearings on the abolition of the Constitution to establish the admissibility of evidence; fact-finding hearings (similar to adult criminal trials) to determine whether the juvenile committed the acts of which he or she is accused; and injunction hearings (criminal hearings). The assistant is assisted by legal advisers and legal advisers. Case assignment focuses on a vertical enforcement model.
The Family Court Division is ideal for lawyers with a passion for juvenile justice and helps communities succeed. Excellent legal research and writing skills are essential to the position. Participation in special projects, such as those involving legislative, policy and operational changes, is available and may be required. Lawyers are expected to visit crime scenes and conduct interviews after hours and other cases and, if necessary, on weekends.
Our work is continuous and constant, it influences people`s lives. The department therefore operates 365 days and nights a year to meet the needs of expertise as well as the rights of detainees beyond family court working hours. Therefore, there is a need to participate in a city-wide reserve system for juvenile court cases that take place outside office hours, as well as to establish a rotating schedule for the Weekend Court, on Public Holiday Evenings (WHEC), which is currently managed by the Criminal Court located at 100, Centre Street. Note: Rotational work that serves OMECs is offset by the granting of an ODR (Regular Day Off) during the work week, as well as transportation home at the end of the shift. Lawyers are required to attend community events, including school, district and community events, so that community members can meet with us and learn more about our work. and that we meet and learn from community members.
